Opportunity Should Be Shaped by Potential not Financial Circumstance
Hope Valley Scholars was founded to help academically promising students in Kenya continue their education and grow into ethical, service-minded leaders.
Who We Are
Hope Valley Scholars Inc. is a U.S.-based nonprofit public charity serving students in Kenya. We support academically promising students experiencing financial hardship through educational assistance, mentorship, leadership development and career readiness.
We stay engaged across the scholar journey because access to school is only the beginning. Students also need trusted guidance, practical preparation and a community that believes in their ability to contribute.
Our Story
The vision for Hope Valley Scholars began with Dr. Joan Githua’s firsthand experience of seeing capable students complete primary school with strong results, only to face the possibility of ending their education because their families could not afford the next stage. Their ability was clear. Their determination was real. The missing piece was access.
That experience became a lasting conviction: a student’s future should not be determined by an inability to pay school fees. Hope Valley Scholars was established to create a pathway where education, mentorship and purpose work together. We help scholars remain in school, develop as leaders and prepare to use their knowledge and influence in service to their families, workplaces and communities.
Our Mission
Hope Valley Scholars supports academically promising students experiencing financial hardship in Kenya from high school through university by providing educational assistance, mentorship, leadership development and career readiness. We equip scholars to pursue excellence, lead with integrity, serve others and contribute to resilient communities.
Our Vision
We envision generations of educated, ethical and purpose-driven leaders whose opportunities transform families, strengthen institutions and create lasting impact across Kenya and beyond.
Core Values
Access with Dignity
We recognize every scholar’s ability, voice and aspirations. We communicate need without reducing a student to hardship.
Integrity & Accountability
We make careful decisions, document approved support and communicate honestly about our work, results and limitations.
Mentorship & Belonging
We believe growth happens through consistent relationships, trusted guidance and a community of support.
Leadership with Purpose
We help scholars connect education with character, responsibility, service and meaningful contribution.
Service & Reinvestment
We encourage those who gain opportunity to use their knowledge and influence to create opportunities for others.
How Hope Valley Works
Step 1
Referral & Identification – We coordinate with local secondary schools to identify academically capable students who are at risk of ending their education due to financial hardship.
Step 2
Needs Assessment & Verification – We visit homes and meet with parents/guardians to verify economic need and understand the family context. We approve assistance for specific, documented education costs.
Step 3
Direct Educational Support – Payments for school fees and required uniform/supply costs are made directly to schools and vendors to ensure funds are used correctly and scholars can remain in class.
Step 4
Formation & Preparation – Scholars participate in mentorship and workshops focused on character, service-leadership, career fields and life skills required for the modern marketplace.
Step 5
Academic Monitoring & Safeguarding – We monitor school progress and maintain regular contact with scholars to ensure they are safe, supported and progressing toward completion.
Step 6
Transitions & Alumni Reinvestment – As scholars transition into university and careers, they remain part of the Hope Valley community, prepared to reinvest their success into the next generation.
